Staunton, VA – For the second straight weekend, the Regent University Women's Volleyball team hit the road for two important matches. The trip began Friday afternoon with a stop at Sweet Briar College as the Royals and Vixens met for the first time ever in program history. Regent was looking to set the tone early and kick-off the weekend on a positive note.
The two teams traded points to start the first set but kills by Junior Erin Saunders (Danville, VA) and Sophomore Alaina Braun-Duin (Stephens City, VA), along with a Saunders service ace gave the Royals a quick lead, 8-1. Another Saunders' kill and service ace increased the advantage and suddenly Regent was in control. Braun-Duin continued to have success at the net, as did Freshman Annalise Todd (Raleigh, NC) and after a service ace by Sophomore Madison Hardiman (Memphis, TN) and more kills from Braun-Duin, the Royals cruised to the set win 25-3.
Freshman Daily Davis (Bristow, VA) began the second set with a service ace, but Sweet Briar would eventually tie the score. However, Junior Reagan Holestin (Virginia Beach, VA) came in to convert her first kill of the game which forced a Vixens' timeout. Senior Brielle Peltonen (Virginia Beach, VA) stepped to the service line to add to the lead and after kills from Freshman Emma Kristiansen (Sparta, NJ) and Davis, the lead expanded to 15-5. The scoring continued with a kill by Freshman Brooklynn Delane (Colonial Beach, VA) and after a Sweet Briar error, the set would go to Regent 25-8.
The Royals fell behind early to begin the third set, but two service aces by Delane eventually put the Royals out in front. The advantage increased to three points after errors by the Vixens, which forced them to call a timeout. A few plays later, Freshman Rylee Stewart (Newport News, VA) served up an ace to maintain the lead, but Sweet Briar began to chip away at it. However, Peltonen would deliver a service ace to stop the run and after another ace from Delane, Regent finished things off for the sweep, 3-0 (25-14).
Every Royal played and contributed to today's win. The team combined for 25 total kills and 15 service aces, while they held the Vixens to a negative hitting percentage.
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, September 20th when they travel to Charlotte, NC to face Johnson & Wales University. First serve is scheduled for 4:30pm.
