Ashland, VA – The Regent University Men's Soccer team ended their two-game weekend road trip through the Commonwealth with a Sunday afternoon match-up against Randolph-Macon College. Both teams were coming into the game with only one loss, and the Royals were looking to defeat a Yellow Jackets team for the first time in program history. They were also looking for their first win ever against an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member.
The first half did not start off the way Regent had hoped, as R-MC connected on a corner to take a quick lead, 1-0. However, a few minutes later the Royals had their own opportunity from a header off a free kick, but it just missed to the right. For the next 10 minutes both teams traded possessions and then at the 21:00 minute mark, Junior Yann-Olivier Kamga (Woodbridge, VA) gave Regent a scoring opportunity as he streaked down the right side of the field but was taken down by a Yellow Jackets defender, however there was no call. Unfortunately, R-MC eventually earned another corner kick and converted to increase the advantage to 2-0. The Royals would answer though, when Senior Graylan Gill (Beaverdam, VA) sent a free kick past the goalie in the upper right corner to cut the lead in half. However, the Yellow Jackets answered with one of their own and at the half the score was 3-1.
Regent began the second half keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field. They were able to apply pressure, and it would pay off as Gill crossed a ball to Kamga, who found the back of the net to pull to within one, 3-2. They would keep the pressure up, but R-MC added three more goals and as the final horn sounded the Royals fell by a final score of 6-2.
Regent will be back in action on Wednesday, September 10th when they host William Peace University in their Home Opener. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
