Elizabeth City, NC - On Wednesday night, the Regent University Women's Basketball team traveled down Route 17 to the Tarheel State for the Annual Border Showdown with Mid-Atlantic Christian University. The two teams play regularly each year, but this was the first time the Royals were coming in as an NCAA DIII program. Regent leads in the overall series and had won the last two meetings. After a solid effort, they were able to extend that streak as they came away with the road win over the Mustangs by a final score of 60-49.
The Royals controlled the game through rebounding, steals, and forcing turnovers, which helped them pull away in the second half after a tight first quarter. Regent outrebounded MACU 42-40 overall and dominated the glass, while generating 17 steals compared to the Mustangs' 7 and forcing 28 turnovers (versus their own 12). Freshman
Mikaylah Telfer (Chesapeake, VA) anchored the frontcourt with a double-double: 10 points (2-18 FG, 6-10 FT), a game-high 15 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. In addition, Junior
Shardae Williams (Fredericksburg, VA) led the scoring with 14 points (6-13 FG). while grabbing 7 rebounds, to go along with 1 assist, and 1 steal. Freshman
Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) finished with 11 points (5-14 FG), 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a team-high 5 steals, while fellow Freshman
Amara Groth (Chesapeake, VA) added 12 points (4-12 FG, 2-9 from three), 3 assists, and 3 steals. Junior
Zipporah Johnson (Waterford, MI) directed the offense and chipped in 9 points (3-9 FG, 1-1 from three), 5 rebounds, and 1 steal. The Royals trailed 16-15 after the first quarter but responded with a 15-13 second quarter to take a slim lead at the half, 30-29. The third quarter proved decisive (17-11), extending the advantage to 47-40, and that allowed Regent to close with a 13-9 fourth quarter. The Royals' largest lead reached 13 points late in the fourth, and their forwards won the battle in the paint with a 29-12 margin.
Regent will be back in action on Friday, January 23rd when they travel to Fredericksburg to face the University of Mary Washington. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
