Arlington, VA - On Wednesday night, the Regent University Men's Soccer team found themselves just across the river from the Nation's Capital as they faced Marymount University. This was the first meeting between the two teams and the third time this season the Royals have ventured north for a game. While Regent was able to generate some offensive opportunities, they would eventually fall to the Saints by a final score of 3-0.
The Royals established their presence early, earning the first corner kick of the match just over three minutes into play. Freshman David Gillespie (Odessa, FL) recorded Regent's first shot in the 20th minute before fellow Freshman Jones Ferguson (San Antonio, TX) created the Royal's best opportunity of the opening half, as he put a shot on goal in the 35th minute, forcing the Marymount goalkeeper to make the save.
Regent came out of the break with increased attacking pressure as Gillespie registered an attempt less than three minutes into the second half, and Freshman John Adams (Chesapeake, VA) followed with a shot on goal in the 55th minute. Freshman Jack Houseknecht (Yorktown, VA) added another attempt moments later before Gillespie forced the Saints into another save in the 60th minute. The Royals continued to push forward as Junior Landen Staples (Chespeake, VA) recorded a shot in the 64th minute and then Regent earned a corner moments later. Gillespie produced another opportunity in the 73rd minute, while Ferguson followed with a shot in the 75th as the Royals continued applying pressure.
Gillespie led Regent with four shots, while Ferguson finished with two, including one on goal. Adams also put an attempt on target. In goal, Senior Connor Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) played all 90 minutes and finished with four saves.
The Royals will be back in action on Saturday, October 10th when they open conference play at Christopher Newport University. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
