Fredericksburg, VA - On Wednesday night under the lights, the Regent University Men's Soccer team had one of its best offensive outputs of the season, finding the back of the net three times in a road match-up against the University of Mary Washington. Despite falling by a final score of 9-3, the Royals battled throughout the contest, with Fellow Freshmen
David Gillespie (Odessa, FL),
Nathan Rizor (Chesapeake, VA) and
Collin Pennington (Ocean City, MD) each scoring a goal in against the Eagles.
Mary Washington struck first in the opening minutes, but Regent continued to work for opportunities in the attacking third as Gillespie put the Royals on the scoreboard at the 20:38 mark of the first half, finishing an unassisted opportunity for his third goal of the season. Later in the second half, Rizor found the net at 56:33 to record his first goal of the season with Junior Melvin Maldonado (Annandale, VA) providing the assist. Pennington added Regent's third goal late in the game, scoring on an unassisted shot at 84:07. The goal marked his first of the season.
Defensively, Freshman Lucas Berdecio (Chesapeake, VA) made six saves during the opening half to help the Royals manage the Eagle's attacking pressure. In addition, Freshman Sebastian Carmenates (McLean, VA) added two saves after entering at halftime, giving Regent a combined eight saves in goal.
The Royals will be back in action Saturday, October 31st when they close out the regular as they host Johnson & Wales University. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00pm. Â
