Virginia Beach, VA - For the second year in a row, Junior
Antoine Brown (Chesapeake, VA) hit the game wining shot to defeat Mid-Atlantic Christian University on Tuesday night. Last year's game winning shot was named the NCCAA National Play of the Year, but today's game winner was just as exciting and important for the Royals. In a season that has seen injuries plague Regent, they have continued to fight through adversity and that was evident in tonight's win over the Mustangs, 65-64.
The Royals jumped out to a strong start, building a double-digit lead by halftime behind efficient scoring and solid interior play as Freshman Joshua Hanna (Chesterfield, VA) was able to establish himself down low. They shot well in the first half (12-of-27 from the field, including 4-of-10 from three) and capitalized on transition opportunities, to take a 41-32 advantage into the break. Freshman Grant Worley (Chesapeake, VA) played a complete game, finishing with 13 points (7-of-7 from the free-throw line) and 4 assists, while Senior Brendan Goods (Melbourne, FL) added 9 points on three made three-pointers.Â
In the second half, the Mustangs began chipping away at the deficit and trimmed the lead to just a few points multiple times, eventually tying the game at 57-57 with under eight minutes to play.. Regent answered with key baskets from Junior Dorian Tema (Frederick, MD), who finished with10 points and 7 rebounds, and Sophomore Chauncey Gilliam (Chesapeake, VA), who grabbed 8 rebounds, but MACU would take their first lead of the second half at 64-63 with just 33 seconds remaining..Â
With the game on the line and the clock ticking under 20 seconds, Brown delivered the game winning moment when he drove hard to the basket and converted a layup with 19 seconds left in the game to give Regent the lead at 65-64. The Royals' defense tightened up on the final possession, forcing a missed three-pointer as time expired, sealing the come-from-behind win.
The Royals will be back in action on Sunday, February 15th when they host Warren Wilson College. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00pm.Â
