Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Royals Defeat MACU For Second Straight Win

Virginia Beach, VA - On Tuesday night, the Regent University Women's Basketball team did something no team has ever accomplished in program history, win two games in a row.  The young program has had to fight its way through adversity to gain respect and after coming away with a last second win on Sunday, the Royals came into today's game with Mid-Atlantic Christian University looking to capitalize on the momentum they have created.  It has been a season of ups and downs but Regent has begun to find their footing and it showed again today as they defeated the Mustangs by a final score of 81-50.

From the opening tip, the Royals set the tone with strong defense and efficient scoring, building a commanding 25-11 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 49-25 at the half. They controlled the glass throughout, out rebounding MACU 45-26 (including 19 offensive boards), which fueled second-chance opportunities and transition plays. Junior Zoppoarah Johnson (Waterford, MI), who was back in the lineup, controlled the tempo for the offense, which resulted in high percentage scoring chances for Regent's offense.  One of the highlights from Johnson was a lob to a streaking Freshman Amara Groth (Chesapeake, VA), which was one of her three assists on the night.

Freshman Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) led the way with a game-high 22 points (7-14 FG, 3-6 3PT, 5-8 FT), adding 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block in a complete 40-minute effort. In addition, Groth contributed 13 points (including 3 threes) and a team-high 4 steals, while Junior My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA) added 12 points off the bench, Freshman Eliza Entzminger (Winterville, NC) chipped in 12 points (2-2 from deep), and fellow Freshman Mikaylah Telfer (Chesapeake, VA) dominated the interior with 10 points and a career high 17 rebounds (10 offensive).  Defensively, the Royals forced 17 turnovers while committing only 11, leading to 15 points off those turnovers. They also dominated in the paint (40 points), while limiting the Mustangs to just 34.5% shooting from the field (20-58) and 25% from three (3-12).

Regent will be back in action on February 14th when they travel to Newport News to face Christopher Newport Uninversity.  Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
