Newport News, VA – A quick trip to the Peninsula presented an opportunity for the Regent Women's Basketball team to face a nationally ranked team in #17 Christopher Newport University. After putting together two solid wins, the Royals were hoping to go toe-to-toe with the Conference's leading team. It was also another opportunity to get ready for the upcoming Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The first quarter began with Regent trading baskets with the Captains, as Freshman Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) matched an opening score and that was followed by a driving basket from Junior My'Angel Carter (Toccoa, GA). Down three early, Freshman Amara Groth (Chesapeake, VA) pulled up and drained a three-pointer to tie the score. CNU would go on a run, but a defensive block shot by Carter slowed the pace down and then another block, this time by Freshman Mykalah Telfer (Chesapeake, VA) kept the Royals in the game. The Captains relied on the press to try to disrupt the Regent offense, but solid passing from the Royals allowed them to break it on numerous possessions. CNU was able to eventually increase their advantage until Shipman converted a floating lay-up from the baseline. She would do it again, this time hitting a short jumper and, as she has done all season, Telfer battled for position on the boards. A few plays later, the duo connected on a scoring play as Telfer found a cutting Shipman who took the pass and scored, which was followed Carter stepping it up on the defensive end of the floor as she converted a steal into a fastbreak lay-up. Telfer started the scoring in the third quarter with an offensive put back and then Junior Zipporah Johnson (Waterford, MI) would steal the ball and take it the length of the court for a fastbreak basket. She would find a cutting Carter for a lay-up and then Groth and Carter were able to add more points from the free throw line, but unfortunately the Royals would fall by a final score of 98-30.
Shipman led the team with 13 points and 4 steals, while Carter added 8 points and was a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line. In addition, Telfer grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with 2 assists and 2 steals.
Regent will be back in action on Sunday, February 15th when they host Warren Wilson College in their final regular season game. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
