Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Groth Breaks Freshman Single Season Three-Point Record As Royals Face Meredith College

Raleigh, NC – On Tuesday evening, the Regent University Women's Basketball team was in the Tarheel State to face Meredith College for the first time on the hardwood.  After winning two of there last three games, the Royals were looking to keep the momentum going.  However, they would face a tough test against the host team out of the USA South Conference.

After falling behind early in the first quarter, Freshman Eliza Entzminger (Winterville, NC) hit a jumper that sparked a run to get Regent back in the game.  That would be followed by a basket from Freshman Mykalah Telfer (Chesapeake, VA), which cut the deficit in half and then two free throws by Freshman Amara Groth (Chesapeake, VA) helped end the quarter with Regent only trailing 12-8.  The second quarter began with Freshman Kennedy Shipman (Virginia Beach, VA) scoring six straight points and then she and Groth would each connected on a three-pointer to pull the Royals to within one of the Avenging Angels lead.  Meredith was eventually able to extend the advantage and at halftime Regent trailed 24-20.

The third quarter saw the Avenging Angels score the first 11 points until Entzminger stopped the run with two free throws.  Shipman would hit two free throws of her own and that was followed by Telfer jumper, which ignited a run by the Royals.  Shipman would score again and then Groth drained a three-pointer, followed by a Sophomore Kaitlyn Russell (Fredericksburg, VA) layup to pull Regent to within six points in the fourth quarter.  Unfortunately, they were unable to get any closer and would fall by a final score of 55-40.

Shipman finished with a game high 19 points, while Groth added 6 points and broke the program's Single Season Freshman Three-Point Record.  In addition, Telfer grabbed 12 total rebounds.

The Royals will be back in action Saturday, February 7th when they travel to Charlotte to face Johnson & Wales University.  Tip-off is set for 1:00pm.
