Scranton, PA - The Regent University Baseball team traveled to the Electric City this weekend for a three game series with Marywood University. They were looking to cap off a week that saw them produce some of their best results of the season. However, they would face a Pacers team that has a long tradition of winning and is known for their offensive play. In order for the Royals to earn a series win, they knew they would have to build play two solid games on the day to accomplish their goal.
Game One
Freshman Jordan Hunt (Virginia Beach, VA) got things started in the first inning, as he delivered a single and then stole second base. Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) advanced Hunt to third with a single and then Junior Ben Tweedy (Altavista, VA) brought Hunt home with a sacrifice fly to right field for the first score of the game. Regent would add three more runs in the third inning, when Alvarez singled home Freshman Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA) followed by a two RBI single from Freshman James Blotter (Newport News, VA) that scored Alvarez and Hunt. The Royals produced two more runs in the six inning when a wild pitch scored Junior Ethan Loucks (Montpelier, VA) and an RBI single by Freshman Caleb Wood (Glen Allen, VA) scored Freshman Dylan Oblepias (Katy, TX). That is all they would need as Junior Will Maloney (Midlothian, VA) went the distance for the complete game win, 6-0.
Vaughan led the way going 3-4 from the plate, while Alvarez, Hunt and Oblepias each finished 2-4. In addition, Hunt stole three bases, and Blotter had two RBI's. On the mound, Maloney pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up only five hits and recording three strikeouts.
Game Two
After three innings of a pitchers duel, Regent struck first with three runs thanks to RBI's from Alvarez, Oblepias and Loucks. They were able to increase their advantage to four runs in the fifth inning when Vaughan singled in Woods. However, the Pacers would eventually answer in the sixth inning with nine runs of their own and was all they needed as the Royals fell by a final score of 9-4.
Blotter finished 2-3 with a run, while Oblepias went 2-3 with an RBI. In addition, Hunt, Blotter and Wood each recorded a stolen base.
Regent will be back in action on Sunday, March 22nd when they face Marywood University in the Rubber Game of the series. First pitch is at 12:00pm.
