Scranton, PA – After splitting the two games to begin the series, the Regent University Baseball team faced Marywood University in the Rubber Match on Sunday afternoon. Junior Elijah Clarke (Newport News, VA) would get the start in the mound, and he was hoping to be backed up by the Royals' offensive that has come alive over the last few weeks.
The Pacers struck first in the second inning with a home run over the right field wall and then added another on a sacrifice fly. Regent threatened in the top of the third when Freshman Caleb Wood (Glen Allen, VA) got aboard on a double, but they were unable to bring him home. However, in the fourth inning, Freshman Keegan Hager (North Chesterfield, VA) singled in Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) and then in the fifth inning Freshman Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA) led off with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Alvarez to tie the game. Marywood regained the lead in their half of the fifth and added another in the sixth and eighth, which is all they needed as the Royals would fall by a final score of 5-2.
Hager led Regent going 2-3 with an RBI, while Vaughan and Wood each recorded a double.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, March 25th when they travel to Buena Vista to face Southern Virginia University. First pitch is at 3:00pm.
