Royals score 37 Runs In Series Sweep Of Johnson & Wales University

Virginia Beach, VA – The Regent University Baseball team capped a successful opening conference series against Johnson & Wales University with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon. The Royals took the first game 14-4 and followed with a 9-1 victory in game two, behind strong pitching and a dominate offensive output that saw them score 37 runs over the weekend while only giving up five.

In the opener, Regent exploded for 14 runs on 16 hits, jumping out to a 5-2 lead after the first inning and never looking back. Freshman Dylan Oblepias (Katy, TX) was the standout of the afternoon, launching two home runs and driving in seven RBIs. Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) added three hits and two RBIs, while fellow Freshmen Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA), Jordan Hunt (Virginia Beach, VA), Colton Sandiford (Seaford, VA) and Junior Ethan Loucks (Montpelier, VA) all contributed extra-base hits. Sophomore Adam Tatham (Ladysmith, VA) earned the win, going five innings, allowing just three runs and the bullpen of Freshman Benjamin Krause (Virginia Beach, VA) and Freshman Conner Abernathy (Kenbridge, VA) shut down the Wildcats late.

The second game saw a more balanced effort from the Royals, who scored nine runs on 10 hits while committing just one error. Junior Dylan Jones (Chesterfield, VA) was outstanding on the mound, tossing six strong innings and allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven to earn the victory. Oblepias continued his hot streak with three hits and two RBIs, including a double, while Hunt added a double and scored two runs, Sandiford drove in two with a double and Loucks chipped in with a two-RBI double.  Regent used small ball effectively, including sacrifice flies and bunts, to manufacture runs.

Regent will be back in action on Monday, March 30th when they travel to Danville to face Averett University.  First pitch is at 2:00pm.
