Regent Opens Weekend Series With Doubleheader Sweep

Virginia Beach, VA - For the first time in program history the Regent University Baseball team won a home game in front of their fans,  In fact, they won two on Friday night behind strong pitching performances and strong at-bats, defeating Berea College by final scores of 10-3 and 17 -5.

Game One

Regent wasted no time gaining control, exploding for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a lead off walk to Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) who promptly stole second and third, Freshman Dylan Oblepias (Katy, TX) delivered a clutch RBI double to open the scoring. Fellow Freshman Colton Sandiford (Seaford, VA) followed with another RBI double, and Junior Ethan Loucks (Montpelier, VA) capped the rally with yet another double, scoring Sandiford for a quick lead, 3-0.

In the second inning, the Royals tacked on another run when Alvarez reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch, pushing the advantage to 4-0. However, the third inning was where Regent broke the game open, pouring in six runs on a mix of hits, errors, and smart base running. Freshman Jordan Hunt (Virginia Beach, VA) starred in the frame, ripping a two-RBI single to highlight the outburst. Oblepias, Sandiford, and Loucks each contributed doubles earlier in the game, combining for a potent middle-of-the-order attack that overwhelmed the Mountaineers' defense, which committed six errors on the night.

On the mound, Senior Will Maloney (Midlothian, VA) was sharp, navigating through five innings while allowing just one run and striking out six. He kept was able to keep Berea off-balance, inducing weak contact and benefiting from Regent's defense—no errors for the Royals, who turned in a clean performance in the field. Freshman Trevor Richardson (Hayes, VA) closed things out strongly, tossing two scoreless innings and fanning a pair to seal the victory.  Offensively, Hunt led the way with two hits and two RBI, while Alvarez reached base multiple times and scored twice, adding three stolen bases to his day.

Game Two

Regent grabbed an early lead in the second inning with a pair of runs as Freshman James Blotter (Newport News, VA) sparked the offense with a triple that scored Freshman Raz Kolakovsky,(San Diego, CA) followed by an RBI single from Freshman Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA) to make it 2-0.

Junior Kaden Hunley (Saluda, VA) delivered a strong outing on the mound, tossing five shutout innings before Berea scratched across four in the sixth. Hunley struck out six and allowed just one hit, keeping the Mountaineers' offense in check early. Freshman Nathan Lamarche (Smithfield, VA) and Junipr Wilson Estep (Williamsbufg, VA) provided solid relief, with Estep closing out the game in the seventh.

The game's turning point came in the bottom of the sixth, where the Royals erupted for nine runs on four hits, three walks, and two hit-by-pitches. Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA) got things started by reaching on a hit-by-pitch, and Regent loaded the bases multiple times, with key RBIs from Loucks, Kolakovsky, Blotter, Nathan, Vaughan, and Hunt.

Offensively, Vaughan led the way with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Blotter contributed two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.  Oblepias and Hunt each added multiple hits and RBIs, and the team stole four bases, including a swipe by Sophomore  Addison Way (Virginia Beach, VA) in the decisive sixth.

Regent will be back in action Saturday, March 7th when they play another doubleheader against Berea College.  First pitches are at 12:30pm and 3:45pm.
