Virginia Beach, VA – For the fourth time this season, the Regent University Baseball team made the short trip down I-64 to face neighbor Virginia Wesleyan University. The two teams are scheduled for five total meetings this year, and on Monday the Royals were looking to even up the series. Today's game mirrored the first one as it came down to the final at bat, as Regent trailed 7-4 entering the top of the ninth but exploded for five runs in their final at-bat to make it a one-run game. However the Marlins mounted their own comeback and the Royals fell by a final score of 10-9.
Regent got on the board early, scoring a run in the first inning. They added single tallies in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to stay within striking distance. The offense came alive in the ninth, when the Royals sent nine batters to the plate and generated four hits while capitalizing on Virginia Wesleyan's fifth error.
Key contributors for the Royals included:
- Sophomore Maddox German (Fairfax, VA)) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, including a crucial RBI single in the ninth.
- Junior Jayden Alvarez (Newport News, VA) delivered a 2-for-6 performance with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. He also provided solid relief pitching, tossing two scoreless innings with a strikeout.
- Freshman Caleb Wood (Glen Allen, VA) added two hits and an RBI while reaching base three times (2 H, BB, HBP).
- Junior Ethan Loucks (Montpelier, VA) chipped in with two hits, including a double, an RBI, and a sacrifice bunt.
- Freshman Nathan Vaughan (Mechanicsville, VA) scored twice and stole two bases
Regent's bullpen kept them in the game as Freshman Benjamin Krause (Virginia Beach, VA), Junior Wyatt Helsel (Poquoson, VA), Junior Wilson Estep (Williamsburg, VA), Junior Dylan Jones (Chesterfield, VA), and Alvarez combined to keep the Royals in the game delivering crucial outs at key moments of the game.
Regent will be back in action on Thursday, April 16th when they make a return visit to Christopher Newport University. First pitch is at 3:00pm.
