Staunton, VA - The Regent University Men's Soccer team battled back from an early deficit and found a second-half equalizer, but a Mary Baldwin University goal in the final minute handed the Royals a 2-1 loss Wednesday afternoon at SMA Worth Field.
The Fighting Squirrels struck first but Regent responded by creating several attacking opportunities throughout the remainder of the half, finishing the opening 45 minutes with four shots and five corner kicks.
The Royals came out aggressively after halftime and increased their offensive production, registering seven shots and five more corner kicks in the second half. Regent's effort was rewarded in the 80th minute when Freshman David Gillespie (Odessa, FL) delivered the equalizer. Gillespie found the back of the net at the 79:22 mark for his second goal of the season, pulling the Royals even at 1-1. He led Regent offensively with four shots, including three on goal.
Freshman Sebastian Carmenates (McLean, VA) kept the Royals within striking distance throughout the afternoon, recording seven saves over the full 90 minutes. Five of his stops came in the second half as Regent worked its way back into the contest. The Royals finished the afternoon with 11 shots, four shots on goal and 10 corner kicks, including seven shots after halftime.Â
Regent will be back in action on Saturday, September 19th when have there home open against Greensboro College. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
