Fayetteville, NC – On Tuesday evening, the Regent University Men's Soccer team made the familiar road trip to the Tarheel State for a non-conference match-up with unbeaten Methodist University. On a soggy night, the Royals remained within striking distance throughout the game and pulled even midway through the second half but would fall in the final minutes by a score of 2-1.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the 28th minute, however Regent stayed close, with Freshman Jones Ferguson (San Antonio, TX), Junior Melvin Maldonado (Annandale, VA) and Junior Landen Staples (Chesapeake, VA) each creating opportunities during the opening 45 minutes. Senior Connor Henriques (Spotsylvania, VA) helped keep the Royals within one, recording four saves in the first half as Regent went into halftime trailing just 1-0.
Henriques came up with one of the biggest plays of the night shortly after the break when Methodist was awarded a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Henriques denied Methodist's attempt to increase their advantage and then followed it up immediately with another save as the Monarchs tried to capitalize on the rebound. In the 59th minute, Regent finally broke through to even the score at 1-1.
On the night, the Royals finished with seven shots to go along with eight saves from Henriques.
Regent will travel back down south to Raleigh, NC on Saturday, September 26th to face William Peace University. Kick-off is set for 3:00pm.
