Kristen Miller (Peoria, AZ) turned away every shot she faced as the Regent University Women's Soccer team earned a 1-0 road victory over Salem College on Monday afternoon.
The win moved the Royals to 3-3 on the season as they kicked off a three day trip to the Piedmont Triad section of North Carolina. The win featured one of the best second-half offensive performances this season as Regent outshot the Spirits 13-5. For the match, the Royals held a 15-9 advantage in total shots and put 10 attempts on goal.
Both defenses held strong throughout the opening 45 minutes but Regent created a pair of opportunities, with Senior Anna Teague (Salisbury, NC) putting a shot on goal in the 18th minute and then Junior Faith Perez (Bakersfield, CA) followed with another in the 19th minute. In the second half, Freshman Victoria Hoffmann (Lewisville, TX) and Freshman Lauren Pond (Midlothian, VA) each registered attempts in the opening five minutes, while Sophomore Kylie Gaines (Ramsuer, NC) followed with an opportunity before Perez forced another Salem save in the 57th minute. This opened the door for Smullen as she began creating problems for Salem. She was able to get two straight shots off and then, in the 70th minute, Smullen broke through.delivering the eventual game-winning goal at the 69:02 mark, putting Regent in front 1-0. The Royals continued to attack throughout the final 20 minutes as Gaines put another shot on goal in the 78th minute before Freshman Finley Hunter (Virginia Beach, VA) tested the Salem goalkeeper in the 86th. Smullen almost added another in the 88th minute, while Hunter and Freshman Ava Reyes (Nokesville, VA) each put shots on goal during the final two minutes.
Smullen led the Regent offense with four shots, three on goal and the game-winning score, while Hunter added three attempts with two on goal. In addition, Gaines and Perez each recorded two shots and Perez placed both of her attempts on goal.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, September 30th when they conclude their road trip against Greensboro College. Kick-off is set for 3:00pm.
